How it works

Energy scanner is a pretend gadget. You point the phone at your child, a beam sweeps up and down, and the battery shows how much energy they've got. Kids love being "scanned", and it's a playful way to get through dinner, bath and bedtime.

It doesn't measure anything. You, the grown-up, choose the result. The magic is in the performance.

How to play

  1. Pick the result. Tap one of the coloured buttons. The scan starts straight away.
  2. Do the scan. Hold the phone up to your child and sweep it slowly from head to toe while the beam does its thing. It takes about four seconds. "Hold still…" helps.
  3. Reveal. The battery fills, pulls a face and shows the result on screen. Read it out with plenty of drama.
  4. Go again. Tap Scan again for the next scan. Siblings will queue up.

Tap Add a name under the buttons and the result will include your child's name, like "Super energy, Ellie!". It stays on your phone only.

The six results

Keeping it fun

Keep it a game, not a battle. It works best when it's silly and light. If mealtimes are already tense, lean on Keep going and Super rather than Not yet.

Never use it as a punishment, or to make a child eat more than they want. Small children are good at knowing when they're full.

Use the routines for change-overs. Bath and bedtime results are a cheerful signal that one thing is ending and the next is starting.

Let them scan you. Children love turning the scanner on their grown-ups. Bonus points for collapsing dramatically on a "Not yet".

Use it like an app

Add Energy scanner to your home screen and it opens full screen like a normal app, and works without signal. It takes about 20 seconds.

How to install it

Privacy

No accounts, no adverts, no tracking. If you add your child's name, it's saved on your phone only and never sent anywhere. Once it's loaded, the scanner works without an internet connection.

Enjoying it?

Energy scanner is free and always will be. If it's earned you a calmer dinner, you can buy me a beer to say thanks.
